Decided I would try a few new things tonight just to get a feel for them. I got a new tripod today, along with an IR remote for my Nikon D3300. So why not try some long shutter night photography, right?!?? Exactly!

So I watched a few videos on YouTube this evening (ok, I watched one… I was too excited to get out there!), grabbed my camera and headed down the street. I took a couple of test shots at the local library and fire station, getting used to the long exposure. Then I headed down to Montongo, parked at the top of the hill, and went about composing my shot. The first trick was getting the camera to find a focal point and start the exposure before the cars were too far into the shot. The second was finding the right long exposure to allow the vehicles to pass all the way through the shot. And the final trick was trying to find the patience to wait for the right cars for my composition (coming, going, simultaneous)!

I’m not too terribly pleased with the shots, but I am happy with what I learned today about night photography. Can’t wait to get better at this!

A couple of things I learned about long shutter photography that I neglected to mention in this post:

    1. Take focus first, then switch lens from Auto to Manual before starting your long exposure. This will prevent the camera from focusing prior to snapping the picture. You can see some of the pictures are slightly out of focus because I didn’t do this.
    2. Use the IR remote to snap the image. This will avoid an camera movement (and blurring) when starting the image.
    3. Take a few shots first to find the right shutter speed to get the image you want.

Getting better and having more fun with photography every day!
