Earnie Burton Wake and Memorial Services

As a professional event photographer in San Diego, I’ve had to photograph my fair share of wakes and memorials. It’s always difficult for me to be there working during sensitive moments such as these, and I always have to remind myself that I’m there to help and not to intrude… my job is to capture the moments, the memories, the compassion and celebration of a loved one’s passing. I’m usually able to stay focused, remain professional, and to do my job. But last week, this memorial service, was tremendously diffuclt for me. Earnie Burton was my friend. We went to high school together, played football together and had so many common friends. And although life took us in different directions after we graduated, I always looked forward to seeing his warm smile at reunions and events around our hometown of Mira Mesa. I’m not gonna lie, at times I found it difficult to stay on point and focus on taking pictures as I watched and listened to Earnie’s brother Essex, his mother, and Earnie’s many friends pay loving tribute to smiling Mayor of Mira Mesa. But as his many, many family and friends stated ever so eloquently, Earnie’s was a life and friendship to be celebrated and remembered. I pray we made him proud.
