09/52 – Scripps Pier, La Jolla, California. Built in 1988 and officially known as the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, Scripps Pier in La Jolla is a fantastic place to capture some amazing and beautiful San Diego sunsets! One of the things I really like about shooting at Scripps Pier is that about 3-4 hundred yards north of La Jolla shores, it’s seems a bit too far for most of the tourists to park and walk along the sandy shores. This makes for a less crowded (albeit, not completely empty!) location, resulting in much less post production work! The pier itself is famous for providing many, many photographers a beautiful backdrop of architecture, surf and sunsets. Just north of the pier is an open stretch of beaches and bluffs that are typically too rocky (and often, unaccessible during high surf) for some great compositions!
I absolutely love taking portraits at Scripps Pier of families, couples and weddings during the golden hours as it gives me a lot of variety in my compositions. The relatively flat beach is perfectly safe for family portraits with kids or small children, versus some of my other favorite beaches that I wouldn’t even think of taking small kids (i.e. Windansea Beach or Sunset Cliffs). Just above the bluffs of Scripps Pier are some amazing venues too, such as UCSD, The Martin Johnson House, The Hidden Swings, and even Torrey Pines Golf Course!
Parking is limited (which also makes this place less crowded), so plan ahead to pay for parking and walk a bit. It’ll be worth it!

Good photos. There’s really no shortage of prime photo locations in San Diego.
Thanks, Daniel! And you’re right, there really is no shortage of beautiful photo locations in San Diego! But I do love exploring and finding new places to shoot! Right now, I’m cycling through a lot of my ‘go to’ places for my 52 Best Places to Photograph in San Diego challenge, but I can’t wait until later in the year when I start shooting new locations!
