Well, the time has finally arrived! This is it, your senior year in high school. The culimination of all your hard work and effort… and you want to leave your mark with senior portraits that announce your coming of age! But where to start? How should you pose? Where should you take your senior portraits? Who should you hired? Aggggghhhhh, so many decisions! Don’t worry, I’ve been a full time, fully insured, senior portrait photographer for a long time, and I’m about to drop some knowledge on you that’ll make taking your senior portaits a snap!

First things first, figure out what type of senior portraits you want to take. If you’ve been playing a certain type of sport for a good portion of your life, you may want to have some pictures of you that represent that. Or maybe you have a pet that’s been by your side, through all the ups and downs that high school has thrown at you over the past four years, and you want your senior portraits with them. Perhaps there’s a group of friends that have been with you through thick and thin, that you swear you’ll always remain close to, no matter where college or life takes you? Or maybe you just want to take this moment to highlight the person that you’ve become, and announce to the world… I have arrived! All of these senior portrait concepts can be achieved, but only if you plan ahead of time and prepare for it! Figuring out what type of senior portraits you want will help you (and your senior portrait photographer) prepare how many (and what type) of outfits you’ll need, as well as what props you should bring to your shoot!

Once you’ve decided what type of senior portraits you want to take, now you need to figure out where you should take them. Ever notice that high school seniors always want to take their senior portraits away from their high school, while college grads want to take their graduation portraits at their college?? It’s the strangest thing! As a high school senior, you’ve got a lot of options. You can do a park setting, the beach, sunset or urbran. If you’re photographer is flexible, you can even do location combinations, although it will probablly cost you a little more! Oh man, and depending on how many outfits and props you have, you should make sure that there be a place to change! Any good senior portrait photographer worth their salt will ask you questions about what you’re looking for, and then have portrait location recommendations ready for you. As a San Diego native and a full time photographer, I’ve actually created a list of recommended portrait locations that I’ve shot at, plus I’m always willing to explore and add new locations! I also have a portable, private changing tent that I can bring along (if requested), as well as a bag of props (i.e. confetti, crystal globe, empty picture frames, chalkboard, etc.) that always adds some fun and creativity to my senior portraits. But choosing the right location is key to capturing some amazing senior portraits!

Ok, so now you know what type of photos you want, and where you’re going to take them… but how do you pose and look your best for your senior portraits?? As you are undoubtedly, in this digital age, this is probably one of the most important details of planning your senior portrtaits! Never fear! As a professional portrait photographer, I always give my clients helpful posing tips that’ll get them looking slim and beautiful during their shoot. Plus, I have an awesome Pinterest board that’s dedicated to giving my clients some amazing senior portrait posing ideas! Please feel free to use these useful portrait posing tips, regardless of which photographer you hire to make sure you look your best for your senior portraits!

The last piece of the senior portraits puzzle is picking the right photographer. You want to choose a senior portrait photographer that fits your style, so be sure to check out their online portfolio. If they don’t have an online portfolio, beware! Make sure you’re looking at recent photos too, as people change, and photographers should get better as the practice their craft. Look into their online reputation and reviews, and make sure their clients are satisfied and happy with the photos they received. And finally, be sure to talk with your senior portrait photographer before you hire them! Your photographer has to make sure you feel comfortable in front of their lens, and the last thing you want to do is feel creepy or uncomfortable in all of your photos!

Finally, if you’re looking for a deal on your senior portraits, ask for discounted packages if you group your senior portrait session with your friends that are also graduating.
