Was driving through the neighborhood yesterday, and noticed there was a community carnival setting up. Naturally, I thought this would be a great opportunity to practice some long shutter shots and night photos! So I grabbed my D3300 and tripod, and headed over this evening just before the sun went down.
Unfortunately, this carnival was not like the carnivals I remembered from my youth! It was an ethnic carnival, so the food and music was definitely focused on their culture, which I enjoyed. But the attendance was sparse, and the rides outdated by at least a decade or so. I walked the entire perimeter of the event, and only found one potential shot that caught my eye… It was a quasi ferris wheel, except it was tilted at an angle and it definitely spun much faster than your normal ferris wheel.
So I snapped a few shots, and practiced what I learned from the other day. Set the focus, then switch it to manual focus to prevent the camera from auto-focusing at the time of the shot. Keep the ISO at 100, and adjust the shutter speed and aperture to allow more light to hit the sensor until you get your desired effect. Take several test photos to confirm, and then compose your final shot. It was fun!
I also went back to Montongo, to take a few more long shutter shots of passing cars. I wanted to capture a shot that was better focused. The great thing was, unlike my first visit there, I simply set up, snapped three photos and left. I guess I AM learning!
