So, as a newbie amateur photographer, what should I shoot? Well, sunsets, of course! You see tons of them on Instagram, so it must be easy, right?!?? LOL

I headed to a a community park down the street that overlooks a wildlife preserve, thinking that will give me some good views to snap some sunsets. Of course, as a newbie, I’m just downright excited to be shooting, that I’m not putting a whole lot of thought into composition (yet). This made things a bit interesting once I got to the park and had to figure out how to compose my shot to avoid the electrical lines, houses and city streets that were visible from nearly every angle. You’ll notice my clever tactic… near bushes as the focal point, strategically positioned to block electrical line towers and housing developments on the horizon. I almost succeeded 🙂

But alas, the exercise for tonight was really about exposure. How do I take those majestic images that capture the beautiful colors and hues of a sunset without overexposing the image?? Well, I learned a few things this evening, that’s for sure! First off, it’s hard to capture color variations on an evening where the sky is crystal clear in Southern California. I’m thinking a little bit of cloud cover would’ve definitely helped to diffuse the sunlight, and give me a bit more color variation! Also, shooting a direct sunset without overexposing your image means that objects in the foreground will likely be silhouettes.

I did get a little color as the sun actually went down, but it wasn’t the vivid, eye popping hues that I see so often from other photographers. Which leads me to my last lesson… that much of that color might (I’m not saying it is) be the result of post production!

For now, I’m going to focus on getting better at aperture, shutter speed and ISO to give me the proper exposure and capture the image as real as possible. As always, each image contains the exposure details. Enjoy!
