Posing for Maternity Portraits

As a San Diego published photographer, one of the things I truly enjoy is capturing the emotion and feelings that makes each moment special for my clients. Maternity portraits are some of my favorite types of photography sessions, as it’s a magical moment for the expectant mother and their partner, and the maternity photos captured by Fotility Photography & Videography are something that will be looked back on for years to come as a joyous time for everyone involved! To think that my clients will be able to share these photos with their child in the future, see how their bodies have changed, and relive the nurturing love in their eyes is something that makes my job as a professional maternity photographer worth every moment!

Regardless of the type of photography session I’ve been booked for, I always like to provide my clients with helpful posing tips to ensure they look their best for their portraits. This includes how to stand, what to do with your arms, where to look, and warnings about lifting your chin. Please feel free to read my blog post on posing for portraits here to review my basic portrait posing tips. In addition to my portrait posing tips, as a photographer I also like to give my clients composition ideas to think about ahead of time. This helps both my photography clients and me as their portrait photographer, to know exactly what style of photos my clients are hoping to achieve in their session with me. I’m constantly adding posing ideas for a wide variety of photography sessions on the Fotility Photography & Videography Pinterest account, which you can view here. You’ll see thousands of photos for nearly every type of photo shoot, including weddings, engagements, couples, graduations, female portraits, male portriats and maternity portraits (just to name a few). You’ll also find tons of photos taken by Fotility Photography & Videography himself on my Pinterest account!

In addition to posing ideas and suggestions, I also like to recommend to my maternity portrait clients to bring whatever props they want, as it’s always a nice touch that helps reflect their excitement and planning for thier upcoming new family addition! Props can be anything and everything that has some personal meaning or value of this time in your life, but some of the standard props that I always recommend for maternity shoots are: sonogram image, baby shoes, baby clothes/outfits, colored balloons and/or smoke bombs (blue for boys, pink for girls), baby toys, pictures of soon to be grandparents, etc. If this is not your first child, it’s always nice to include siblings in maternity photo sessions as well, so my clients are always encouranged to bring other children and/or pets to their maternity shoot!

Lastly, as with all of my portrait photography clients, I like to remind them to be themselves in front of my lens. My job as your personal photographer is to help tell your story and reflect the REAL you, not some posed or staged moment. This moment is about you, and Fotility Photography & Videography is here to help you Fell, Capture & Share What Matters Most to You. So I’ll constantly be talking with you, relaxing you, drawing out your personality and feelings of this special time in your life. Maternity photo sessions are obviously all about the bond between the mother and baby, so as a photographer, I strive to highlight that connection. I do this through a variety of techniques, asking my clients to cup their child, to look downward towards their tummy, or off into the distant future and imagine what it holds for them.

Hope this information helps you achieve the best possible look for your maternity photos and portraits! Should you need any posing ideas, please feel free to click on any of the buttons below, as I also provide my clients with thousands of posing suggestions!
