2015 Mira Mesa Fourth of July Fireworks Show

Ok, I’m not gonna lie. I was both excited and nervous about shooting fireworks tonight. I’d watched tutorials about this, I’ve thought about it for a week, I’ve planned what I needed to do to get some good photos (blog post coming soon). But all of that thought and preparation can be a blur when you actually sit down to do the task. Fortunately, things turned out as good (or better) than expected, and I’m once again pretty pleased with the end results.

My nephew and I (along with my sister and her boyfriend) walked over to the Mira Mesa Community Center after spending a day bbq’ing and swimming at my brothers house. We got there just in time to find ourselves a nice spot, and my nephew and I set about taking a few test photographs. We made adjustments, took more test shots, and made adjustments again. We new making adjustments during the fireworks was going to be challenging, especially with long exposure and the length of the show itself, so we wanted things to be just right so we could just snap shots. Aperture… check. Shutter speed… check… ISO… check.

And then the fireworks started. Uncheck.

When the show started, the community shut off all the field lights to give a better show. Obviously, this was going to have a big impact on our exposure settings. And then we had the light coming off of the fireworks themselves. More exposure changes! I made adjustments quickly, clamping down my aperture and shortening my shutter speed. I was even able to experiment adjusting ISO, shutter speed and aperture to try and get more fireworks into my composition. It was fast and furious, but it was a blast!

Keep snapping, and remember to Feel, Capture & Share™
