I had been waiting for this day all week. I had a full day of taking photos planned, starting with the annual community parade, moving to our family barbeque, and then closing it out with my first attempt at photographing fireworks. It was bound to be a good day!
My plan for shooting the parade was to focus on photographing people. Up until this point, my subjects had been mostly landscapes, beach scenes and sunsets. Today I wanted to capture some human expression and emotion. Fortunately, my brother lives around the corner from the annual Mira Mesa Fourth of July Parade route, so it was an extremely short ride on my Santa Cruz longboard and I got there in plenty of time to find a great location and setup camp. The challenge for me today as an amateur photographer in shooting a progressive event was to select my subjects, arrange my composition, and then adjust my composure quickly as the subjects moved from far to near. Needless to say, I took literally hundreds of shots, of which a decent handful I was pleased with. This was totally expected, and I was extremely pleased with the end result.
I also handed out my first Fotility card today. I ordered these cards because when I took up this hobby, I knew I’d be taking photos of strangers, and that might seem a bit awkward to some. So I got the cards to give to people that I photographed, so that they could view and access the photos for free – making it not so awkward and strange. As I was preparing to shoot the parade today, there was a family right next to me. They let their young toddler son snap a few photos of them with their camera, and the moment was something that I just had to capture.
