Tonight I headed over to the Sorrento Valley Train Station, just down the street from my house, to try and practice some long exposure motion images of the train. I had never been to the station before, so I found it kind of interesting with some pretty cool views. I thought for sure that I was walking away from here with at least a few good shots tonight! Think again!
Tonight’s lesson was on preparedness. As in, when you decide to go into a valley on a hot, muggy night, bring lots of bug spray and make sure you’re covered well! As soon as I got there, I started unpacking (mistake number one), excited to setup my first shot. In hindsight, I probably should have stood there and surveyed the area for a few moments to get a feel for it. Surely, I would’ve immediately noticed the hundreds of mosquitoes swarming around my bare legs and arms! Instead, I felt them biting me as soon as I was mounting my camera to the tripod.
For a brief moment, I thought to myself ‘this is the sacrifice a good photographer must make to capture the right shot’. I lightly swatted the mosquitoes away and began composing my shot. Well, as you can see… my dedication did not last long. Within minutes of being there, I was bitten at least 15-20 times. I hurriedly packed my gear up and got the hell out of dodge.
As soon as I got back home, I was on Amazon researching the best bug repellant. I settled on Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Guard, after reading all of it’s positive reviews. It should get here in a few days, and I can try the train station again!
