Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach

02/52 – Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach, California. This is another of my favorite places to shoot engagements and family photos, but be careful, the bluffs can be slippery (so not really suggested for small children and kids)! Sunset Cliffs is a large, long stretch of beach that stretches along the Pacific Ocean, offering a variety of sandy beaches and rocky bluffs that offer spectacular photos, especially during sunset. Although it’s almost always sunny in San Diego, for my beach shoots I prefer slightly cloudy conditions to diffuse the light and paint the skies with amazing colors, so try to check the weather before you head out to see what to expect. On exceptionally clear days (like the one in this shoot), I used an ND8 filter to block out a lot of the natural light and enhance the colors. Although the most popular section of Sunset Cliffs is the Ocean Beach Pier, I actually prefer to shoot at the south end of the strip, away from all the people and the crowds. Plus, parking is so much easier! Take note though, Sunset Cliffs draws quite the crowd during peak season to watch the sun set, so driving out can be a test in patience!

I love to capture my clients on the bluffs, overlooking the pounding surf or gazing into each others eyes as the sun sets behind them. There are also some amazing coast line shots that can be taken, pulling in the natural formations and coastline buildings into your composition. For you nature photographers, there are plenty of opportunities to capture some beautiful close ups and wide angle shots of all the natural rock formations with the waves crashing against them or the sea water draining out!
